Operation Camino de Santiago: X-ray to the Jacobean Route in seven stages

Only three years left the Camino to face one of its most important goals of this century, the next Holy Year, which will be celebrated in 2021 and in which it is expected that all the records of affluence will be beaten. The present of the Camino de Santiago in 2017 could not be better; its popularity increases among national pilgrims, but especially among foreigners, who already account for 56% of the total. This growing popularity of the Jacobean Route brings each season to Santiago de Compostela hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, surpassing each year its own brand (in 2017 there were 301,036 pilgrims).

The expectation for the Jacobean phenomenon grows as we approach the calendar to 2021 and therefore the administrations are already working without pause to be able to offer a careful and integrated Camino de Santiago in their surroundings, improving infrastructures or signage. There is a lot of work ahead until 2021, but the first thing is to check the current state of the route and analyze the improvements you need; for it La Voz de Galicia starts this Saturday a series of eight reports by the hand of two pilgrims who will travel the French Way for a week from Vilafranca de O Cebreiro to Santiago de Compostela.

The objective of Operación Camino de Santiago is to find answers to the overall success of the Jacobean Route, but above all to analyze the current state of what it is in, dissecting each stage, each path, each establishment of services and note them. The tour of these two pilgrims will last for a week through seven stages, reporting in the form of a personal diary the best and worst of the Camino de Santiago, as well as the personal stories of the pilgrims who know walking to the finish line.
