After many protests by some of the works in the Camino de Santiago, finally the regional government of Galicia has been denounced by Foro do Camiño, composed of more than thirty cultural organizations, neighborhood and environmentalists. The Foro do Camiño has attended the International Council on Monuments and Historical Artistic Sites (ICOMOS), who acts as technical adviser for UNESCO in the field of the development of the World Heritage List, to denounce the works carried out by the regional government in the Primitive Way and Northern Way.
These are two little crowded routes, that until now, still maintained the traditional and rural "flavor" of great beauty that now is in danger, according to many organizations. Some of the works promoted by the Tourism Agency of Galicia, are not respectful of the cultural heritage of both routes, and it seems that now when the warnings are long gone organizations will begin to act.
Foro do Camiño ensures that, under the pretext of improving and recover some routes, the regional government of Galicia is altering the historical route of the two ways, simply because of touristic interests. According to the cultural organization, about 12 kilometers might have been affected by these disrespectful works in the Jacobean routes, ranging from some firm foundation until the removal of stones from the side locks.
The law passed in 1996 defendeded these ways as goods of cultural character associated with a historical territory, however, they were not classified as functional paths of transit or tourist-commercial, so construction infringe on the cultural and historical character of the North Way and the Primitive Wat, according to officials of Foro do Camiño.
