Jubilee of Santiago: a Holy Year to atone for sins

What is the Jubilee of Santiago? Within the scope of the Catholic tradition there are different types of jubilees, such as the Holy Year, celebrated every 25 years on a regular basis; Extraordinary jubilees, to commemorate special events (such as the Jubilee of Mercy, convoked by Pope Francis) and the Jubilees in perpetum, granted to certain sacred sites of Christianity by the Holy See. This last case is the one of the city of Santiago de Compostela - with the Jubilee of Compostela - under whose cathedral would find buried the rest of the Apostle Santiago the Major, but it is not the only one: also they have their own jubilee the localities of Santo Toribio de Liebana, Caravaca de la Cruz in Spain, as well as Rome and Jerusalem.

A tradition that goes back to the s. XII

The Compostela Jubilee bestows plenary indulgence on the faithful each Holy Year Jacobean, which is celebrated on a regular basis every year whose 25th of July (feast of Santiago the Apostle in Spain) falls on Sunday. This date coincides on Sunday in a regular cadence of 6, 5, 6 and 11 years, spanning every century up to 14 years holy jacobeos. During all the years of Jubilee the Holy Door of the Cathedral of Santiago remains open, while the usual years is closed; Although it is tradition to cross it for the faithful that enters the Cathedral, it is not a requirement to receive the indulgence. The first Compostela Jubilee Year was established by Pope Calixto II (who had been a pilgrim before being Pope) for 1126, although it was not until 1179 that Pope Alexander III declared him a perpetual Jubilee, valid for the atonement of the sins of The faithful and equated it with the jubilees of Rome and Jerusalem. The establishment of the Compostela Jubilee and the subsequent confirmation of the popes that succeeded Calixto II played a fundamental role in the promotion of pilgrimages through the Camino de Santiago.

The Camino de Santiago and the Jubilee

The requirements to receive the indulgence of the Jubilee of Compostela are directly related to the pilgrimage to Santiago. Although this is not obligatory to obtain the plenary indulgence, the fact of having to visit the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela of present body makes many faithful take advantage to realize the Way of Santiago. They do it in mass each Compostelano Holy Year for religious reasons, ending many tens of thousands of pilgrims their way in the Galician city, as happened in 2010 and is expected to happen again in the next Xacobeo 2021. Once in Santiago, to receive the Plenary indulgence of the Compostela Jubilee, the faithful must visit the Cathedral, receive the sacraments of the Confession (it is valid in any of the parishes of the city and Monte do Gozo) and the Communion, in addition to praying for the person of the Pope and his Intentions.
