The main road that connects Lugo with the plateau and, to the Galician Atlantic coast is the free motorway A-6, it circulates the city and connects to roads that lead to A Fonsagrada (that of the Primitive Way, the LU-630); to the Cantabrian coast, Ribadeo and Asturias along the coast (the N-540 in a northeast direction); Palas de Rei, Melide, Arzúa and Santiago (a combination of the N-540 with the N-547 in a southeast direction); to Ourense via the N—540 (in a southern direction); and Sarria and Monforte de Lemos via the CG-2.2.
A Coruña and its airport-Alvedro- is located one hour from Lugo. It takes the same amount of time to get from the walled city to A Fonsagrada (where the Primitive Way enters Galicia). This journey can be done via the LU- 630 with the bus company Her-vei. There are various services a day in both directions. The timetables can be consulted on the webpage of the company, on the website for the bus station of Lugo. (Phone: +34 3498222395. The station is centrally located, very close to the wall, in the Praza da Constitución of Lugo).
The Camino of Santiago enters Lugo close to the train station. In fact pilgrims pass below the bridge of A Chanca. The train services however, are not very frequent, the lines are operated by the company Renfe and provide a connection between the walled city and A Coruña, (there are five trains a day and the journey takes at least an hour and a half), Ourense (two services a day, an hour and a half in journey time) and, Monforte de Lemos (another five).
There is no direct train to Santiago of Compostela, nor are there good road connections to the Galician capital. Galicia has a poor local rail service. To Madrid there are two daily trains. One is managed by the company Alvia and takes seven hours to arrive in the capital and, the other Trenhotel takes nine hours to complete the same journey.
Correos offers a delivery backpacks service so you can walk without loads and enjoy the routes and stages. You can also purchase a packaging and shipment of bicycles service. The price is 42,03 euros (VAT included, shipping to mainland Spain). This is available in all offices.
