Camino de Santiago

We have compiled a list of useful tips to help you choose your ideal Camino de Santiago route based on your preferences.

"It's my first Path and I'm looking for a social experience"

In case the social part of the Camino de Santiago is important for you, the best option will be to realize the French Way.

The French Way is the most popular road, starting at St Jean Pied de Port. From St Jean Pied de Port to Santiago it takes approximately 35 to 40 days, depending on the pace.

Camino de Santiago

According to official statistics of the Camino de Santiago, more than 70% of the pilgrims prefer the French Way, 15% for the Portuguese Way and just over 5% for the Northern Way.

"I do not have many days to do the Way"

It is not necessary to start the French Way from St Jean Pied de Port. In fact, it is typical to start the French Way from other points like Roncesvalles, Pamplona, Logroño, León, Ponferrada, O Cebreiro or Sarria.

In case you have 2 weeks, you could start from Ponferrada. If you only have 1 week our recommendation is to start from Sarria on the French Way or from Tui on the Portuguese Way.

Another interesting option is to make the last section of the Via de la Plata, from Ourense, although it is important to note that this Camino is less traveled than the French Way or the Portuguese Way.

An option that I like to recommend is to start the Camino from Lugo to carry out the final section of the Primitive Way, in this way, we will enjoy a perfect combination of days with few pilgrims around us and, as we approach Santiago, we will see how the The number of pilgrims who walk around us multiply.

"I have already done the French Way, now for which I choose?"

There are other interesting roads such as the Portuguese Way, the second most popular or the Camino de Finisterre ending in Muxía.
If you are in a good physical condition another interesting option is the Northern Way, especially in summer to take advantage of the perfect combination of good weather and unique landscapes.

"I would like to do it by bicycle"

All roads of Santiago can be done by bicycle, with recommended stretches of between 50 and 60 kms daily. It is important to note that cycling is only recommended for people who are used to cycling and basic maintenance.

I would not recommend doing the French Way by bicycle in the summer months as the Camino is very busy and will be uncomfortable to coincide with so many pilgrims doing the Camino de Santiago on foot.

Ideally, the Northern Way fits perfectly for cycling.
