La compostela

Are the 100 kilometers required to the pilgrim who arrives in Santiago to give him the compostela? For several mayors of Galician localities of the French Way like Samos, Sarria or Triacastela, deeply linked with the Camino de Santiago yes they are. According to reports La Voz de Galicia, Pilar López, mayor of Sarria, has left from O Cebreiro this week to claim the idea that pilgrims have at least to cross all the Galician stages of the French Way in order to request the compostela in Santiago. We would be talking about 155 kilometers (from O Cebreiro) compared to the 100 currently demanded by the Church.

Faced with the minimum distance required to demonstrate arrival at the Cathedral of Santiago, the mayoress of Sarria, supported by several associations and mayors, bets to disagree with a Galician compostela. The idea of increasing the minimum distance is supported by associations and other mayors, such as Olga Iglesias of Triacastela; Julio Gallego, of Samos; Jose Luis Raposo, of Pedrafita or Juan Serrano, of Portomarín. The mayors bet on treating the idea in the Commonwealth of Concellos of the French Way in Galicia and from there transfer it to the relevant entities, like the dean of the Cathedral of Santiago.

Historically they had been demanding at least 300 kilometers of route when arriving at the Cathedral to obtain the document, a figure that seems that some associations related with the Way of Santiago support. However, the 155 kilometers of the stages in Galician territory seem to be a much more reasonable figure to require the pilgrims to arrive on foot. This option is the one that more support finds within the localities of the French Way, that would be in favor of that Galicia had more relevance, with a own compostela.
It will be necessary to be very attentive to see what route this proposal has and if finally from Santiago de Compostela it is decided to increase the distance or if finally it is decided to coexist the current compostela (recognized by the Church) with a specifically Galician (recognized by the municipalities) .
