Where to sleep on the Camino de Santiago depends solely on you. There is a huge range of accommodation on the Camino de Santiago for all budgets and personal tastes, for those who seek to meet people and we care about sharing their personal space and for those who do not want to give up their privacy and rest. While on the road, whether you decide to choose traditional hostels, hostels, boarding houses, campgrounds or hotels, you must adapt to the standards of each one, especially those of the hostels, because they are individuals. In them you will share your space with other pilgrims in large rooms with bunk beds, and you must know that normally the hour of rest (when the lights go out) is usually set at 22:00, with opening times at 12: 00 in The morning and departure at about 9:00. Lastly, you must know that to get lodging in the hostels it is necessary to present the pilgrim credential.

Sleep in hostels on the Camino de Santiago

Undoubtedly sleeping in hostels on the Camino de Santiago is the most chosen option for pilgrims, for simplicity and for how economic they are. We can not book in advance (in public hostels), but if we remove the weeks of greater influx in the summer months, there is usually no problem finding a place. In routes like the French Way, there are hostels in all the towns of end of stage and in many intermediate towns, nevertheless in other routes, it is necessary to stick to the localities of end of stage, since they are less frequented routes. If you do the Camino de Santiago by bike, you should keep in mind that pilgrims on foot always have preference when it comes to accommodation.

If you have never slept in a hostel, you should know that you sleep in rooms with bunk beds in which we share our space with many other pilgrims, an inconvenience for many, but part of the traditional essence of the Camino de Santiago. It is very advisable to use sleeping caps and go to bed soon, as some pilgrims will begin to prepare their journey in the early hours of the morning, when the hustle and bustle makes it difficult to fall asleep.

Camino de Santiago without sleep in hostels

Each pilgrim walks the Camino de Santiago as he wishes and as he can. This way, you do not have to stay in hostels if they are not made for you or you do not want to share your space with strangers. Perfectly you can choose to stay in pensions, campings hostels and even hotels, which will not miss along the routes of the Jacobean, especially in the case of the French Way, the route with greater influx. On summer days with the highest concentration of pilgrims in the most visited places, you may even find yourself forced to look for some of these accommodations, in case there are no places in the hostels. Sleep or not sleep in hostels? Of course, if you plan to walk a good part of the Camino de Santiago on foot, spending a few weeks sleeping in hostels, pensions or hotels every night will make the trip quite expensive, although of course, the check-out times are wider, we can stay longer Nights and surely the rest will be greater, being the exclusive space for us.

Do you have to reserve a place in the lodges of the Jacobean route?

In normal conditions you can not reserve a place in (public) hostels; These are occupied according to the order of arrival of the pilgrims, another thing different are the private shelters. In the fall / winter months, with less influx of pilgrims, you will not find accommodation problems, but in the summer months, especially in the French Way, a good idea is to call the hostels in advance to find out if there are any vacancies . Although the best idea of all is to get up early and finish your stage in the middle of the morning, leaving aside the warmer hours. Except in exceptional conditions, you can usually only spend one night in each hostel to leave room for the new pilgrims.

How much does it cost to sleep on the Camino de Santiago?

The price is variable depending on the type of accommodation we choose (or is free in high season). The price of public hostels can range from 6 to 10 euros, although sometimes a donation is simply accepted. It is a symbolic price to cover expenses, since these accommodations are owned by the town councils or autonomous communities and are managed by volunteer hospitaleros, who altruistically attend the pilgrims. In the case of private hostels, where you can normally book, the price goes up to 10-12 euros.

Can you sleep for free on the Camino de Santiago?

The Camino de Santiago always speaks of the Jacobean hospitality, which refers to the kindness of the Camino people to help the pilgrims and shelter them in times of need. But this does not mean that no one has the obligation to accommodate pilgrims free of charge, or that we can walk the Camino de Santiago "for free". On occasions when the influx of pilgrims is massive and shelters are filled, some municipalities enable sports centers so that pilgrims who have been left without a place have a place to sleep. That yes, the bag runs of account of the pilgrim.

Should we take sack to the Camino de Santiago?

Not strictly necessary, but highly recommended. It is always foreseeable to take sack to the Camino de Santiago, because although we are always going to give sheets and blanket in each hostel, it is not bad to use our coat and have an extra layer, especially in the colder months. In summer, it is always a good idea to carry a thin bag specially designed for this season, so we will not run out of place in the hostels and have to sleep in the open on the Camino de Santiago. We will not be the first pilgrim to sleep in a sports hall, hall of events or under the mantle of the stars, and there we will be grateful to take him with us.

Where to sleep with a dog on the Camino de Santiago?

Traditionally the lodgings of the Camino have not admitted pets, although this is changing little by little and leaving our dog tied sleeping in the open is no longer the only option. More and more accommodations allow us to sleep with our dog in the same room, many of them camping, although we also find more and more inns and pensions. Some of them charge extra, although they are usually small amounts. In order to know if pets are welcome we strongly recommend that you always call the lodgings in order to be sure and not be surprised. Doing the Camino de Santiago with dog, the options in the shelters are greatly reduced; Dogs can not enter the common rooms of the pilgrims, but in many occasions they are equipped inner courtyards where they can be tied to spend the night (the choice depends on each owner). If we are going to leave our dog tied, we must make sure that we do not go to spend the night barking, for the rest of the other pilgrims.
