What moves us to walk the Camino in 2017?

What motivates us to walk the Camino de Santiago? Do pilgrims move for religion as much as they did decades ago? Do we do it for spiritual reasons or adventure? This is perhaps one of the most interesting questions for which we have sought answers in the survey of ViveCamino to the pilgrims who have traveled the Camino de Santiago in 2017. In it have participated more than 400 pilgrims from the community and our Facebook page and it has helped us to know much better the profile of the pilgrim who walks the Jacobean routes in 2017.

According to the results of the survey, the main motivation for pilgrims to walk is the search for new experiences (66.3% of the respondents). The following reason is the interest in culture and the historical and artistic heritage of the Camino de Santiago (37.9%), followed very closely by religious motivations (33.9%). Finally, 11.7% of respondents say that they have traveled the Camino for tourism.

Alone or accompanied? How do we do the Camino de Santiago?

We also wanted to ask about the company that you take to the Camino de Santiago and what we have found are very heterogeneous answers. In the first place we find the group of pilgrims who have traveled the Camino this year as part of a small group of people (38.2%), followed by pilgrims who have embarked on this adventure alone (31.8%). We are very close to the pilgrims who have made the journey as a couple in 2017 (29.7%) and already a long way away, the group that has pilgrimed as part of a large group of people (9.7%). Who do we like to go to Santiago de Compostela with? It seems that we are not going to agree.

Veterans or rookies in the Camino de Santiago 2017?

We also wanted to know more about your experience as pilgrims. Those who have made the Camino in 2017, are you first timers or seasoned veterans? It seems that the great popularity of the Camino in recent years has much to do with the majority response: 44.7% of the pilgrims surveyed have traveled the Camino for the first time this year. In that case we hope that the advice of ViveCamino have helped you.

We also find many pilgrims who have decided to repeat on the Camino this year: 33.9% had already traveled between 2 and 5 times. Lastly we find the most veterans of the Jacobean route: a not inconsiderable 21.4% has already traveled the Camino de Santiago 5 or more times: Congratulations!
