The associations of friends of the Camino de Santiago are non-profit organizations that are fundamental for the care of the Jacobean Route, its correct signaling of the routes that travel in the Peninsula and the recovery of the pilgrimage to guarantee that the pilgrims can live the best experience since Its starting point to Santiago de Compostela. The activities and raison d'être of these associations (both in Spain and abroad) focus on serving the pilgrim, informing him about the Camino de Santiago routes, issuing credentials, training him with specific courses and offering his hospitality through Hospital volunteers, who directly manage public shelters.

However the work of these associations also reaches fields such as research, with the publication of bibliographic material of all kinds, and of course ensure the good state of the routes and their signage, where historically have had along with the pioneer pastor Elías Valiña a key role since the rise of the Camino de Santiago in the second half of the twentieth century. There is a superior body that brings together many of these associations at the national level: the Spanish Federation of Associations of Friends of the Camino de Santiago, although there are many others that are not federated.
