Alcazaba de Badajoz

Inside the Extremaduran city of Badajoz, we find one of the most important historical monuments, the Alcazaba of Badajoz. This majestic building is a Muslim fortification built in the twelfth century by the Almohad dynasty and was changing over time its appearance serving as a castle or building of the citadel, between the thirteenth century - XIII and XVII - XIX respectively.

While there are many important points that we can visit in Badajoz, such as the Cathedral of Badajoz, the Alcazaba of Badajoz is one of the most emblematic for all the historical value of this building. Between other remarkable data of this citadel it emphasizes that it is one of greatest of all the world in its totality arriving at a total of 8 hectares and about 1300 meters of canvas of wall conserved.

One of the largest citadels in the world

The citadel of Badajoz was founded in 875 by Abd-al Rahman Ibn Marwan who is considered by the founder of the city of Badajoz. This had to build the left bank of the river Guadiana to be the only site in which emir would allow and very close to the border with Portugal which increased its defensive character.

With time the original aspect of the citadel of Badajoz was changing as a result of some extensions and conservation works, but mostly retains the original structure of the Almohad era. This calls the attention of thousands of people who visit the city every year that passes, as well as many pilgrims who cross Badajoz through the Via de la Plata.
