Baños de Montemayor is a charming municipality and town in the province of Cáceres. Located in the north of the province, in the Ambroz Valley, it is known for its thermal baths of Roman origin. For this reason, it is a destination worth visiting for all those pilgrims who venture along the Silver Route on their way to Santiago de Compostela. However, the charm of Baños de Montemayor does not end at its thermal baths, but among its points of interest is the Church of Santa María de la Asunción.

The Church of Santa María de la Asunción de Baños de Montemayor, also known simply as the Church of Santa María, is a Catholic temple whose construction began at the end of the 15th century and was completed in the 17th century. Since 1959 it has been the seat of the only parish church in the municipality, although its history does not end there, as on 25 May 2022 it was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest after being a candidate for this honour in 1982 and a new dossier was started in 2021.

In 1644, Baños de Montemayor unified the population of, until then, two separate towns: Baños de Montemayor and Baños de Béjar. Despite their unification, over the years, until 1959 to be precise, there were two parishes separated by the Vía de la Plata and belonging to two different dioceses, Santa María belonging to Coria and Santa Catalina to Plasencia. From this point onwards, both churches joined the diocese of Plasencia, leaving only the Church of Santa María.

According to several studies and reports, the church may have been built on the remains of an earlier fortress in which there was a well or cistern. Although part of its original structure from the end of the 17th century remains, in the 20th century it underwent major alterations that affected, above all, its roof as well as a significant enlargement of the building. Of these changes, one original vault, the sacristy, was preserved. For this reason, a visit will show us not only its charm, but also some of its great heritage elements.

If you are visiting Baños de Montemayor, don't miss its main façade, the main altarpiece and the altarpiece of Santa Catalina which are kept inside, as well as its bell tower, which has a top that is unique in Extremadura. Before arriving, you will be surprised by the imposing bell tower on the outside, which is located at the foot of the church. For this reason, if you would like to visit this church, which is classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest, its opening hours are from 11:00 to 13:00 throughout the week.
