How to get to León to start the Camino de Santiago

We explain the different means of transport that you can use to get to the city of León

The city of León is one of the most emblematic cities of Castilla y León, but also of the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela. The capital of the Leonese community is one of the main starting points for the French Way, along with other popular starting points such as O Cebreiro, Ponferrada and Sarria. That is why many pilgrims wonder how to get to León, something that we will solve below:

How to get to León by plane

One of the best ways to get to León is by plane. This city has its own airport so it is perfect for travelling quickly and from anywhere in the world. It is located 9 kilometres from the centre of León and receives daily flights from Madrid and Barcelona, as well as other major cities on the Iberian Peninsula. During the summer months the frequency of flights is higher and there are direct flights to Gran Canaria, Menorca and other Spanish cities.
Airlines operating out of León airport include Air Nostrum and Air Europa. Once you have arrived you can hire a car, although if you want to start the Camino Francés it is best to use the taxi service.

Currently there are lines connecting it with Gijón, A Coruña, Madrid, Barcelona, Vigo and Alicante, but in time it is expected that there will be many more lines.
Although the lines available at León train station link the city with the north of Spain, people wishing to travel to León from the south can also travel by train.
