On the Camino del Norte you can visit the beautiful town of Tapia de Casariego. Being the pioneer of suf in the Cantabrian Sea, this town is a destination that should be visited to discover all the charms it has.
Tapia de Casariego is a fishing village located in Asturias. Undoubtedly, it is one of the most touristic towns in western Asturias, which highlights its strong ties to fishing and the canning industry.
Tapia impresses with its port and its fishing houses, in addition to the panoramic views that can be appreciated from its promenade by the sea or its viewpoint. A variety of illustrious characters have grown up in this fishing village, which can be discovered in the exhibition "The lords of the Palace Houses", located in the House of Culture.
Another of the charms of the town is that it is the pioneer of surfing in the Cantabrian Sea, in fact, Anguileiro beach is one of the most famous in which the World Surfing Championship events begin. It is not only a pioneer in this aspect, since it was the first port where the corn that came from America landed.
Walking around the town you can see its beautiful fishing port and sit on the terraces that have the bars and restaurants on the pier. It has a picturesque picture with its moored fleet, the island's lighthouse and the outdoor docks.
Going up through the fishing district of San Sebastián, you can get closer to San Blas, the oldest area of Tapia de Casariego. While if you walk through La Guardia, you can contemplate wonderful views of the Cantabrian Sea from the Os Cañóis viewpoint.
As for heritage, it has several religious monuments and civil architecture, which we find in examples of palaces or also called "mansions".
The town is very festive, in fact, it is the cradle of the Festival Interceltico d'Occidente, which was declared Tourist Interest. In addition to this festival, other festivals are also held throughout the year. During February, the festivities of San Blas, in June those of San Pedro and the festivities of El Corpus in Serantes. In July, the festivities of Nuestra Señora del Carmen and in September those of Nuestra Señora de la Porteira.
You can access Tapia de Casariego by road, by rail or by bus.
By road it is connected by the A8 motorway and the N-634 that runs along the Asturian coast linking Avilés and the A-66 to the east, and the A-6 and N-642 to the west. By rail, there is the Oviedo-Ferrol and Ferrol-Oviedo connection with daily trains in both directions. The bus station is located in La Roda, 7km from the capital. Tapia has a bus stop with the following lines: Oviedo-Ribadeo, Ribadeo-Oviedo, Gijón-Ribadeo and Ribadeo-Gijón.
Completing the Camino del Norte in stage 11, you will start the La Caridad - Ribadeo route that passes through Tapia de Casariego. The total distance is 23.4 km, in which you can enjoy different towns such as El Franco, Tapia de Casariego and Castropol.
