A Journey through the History and Art of Vigo

The Co-Cathedral of Santa María de Vigo, also known as the Collegiate Church of Santa María, is a place of great historical and cultural importance for the city of Vigo. We are talking about a temple with a history that goes back several centuries, a living testimony of the architectural and religious evolution of the region.

The original church was built in the 12th century, although the structure we see today has been the result of numerous reconstructions and modifications throughout different centuries, the most important being the result of attacks in the 15th century by pirates. The version that we can visit and find today dates back to the 19th century.

If we talk about architecture, the Co-Cathedral of Santa María is a beautiful building of neoclassical architecture, although it also contains different types of styles ranging from Romanesque to Gothic. A clear example of the different phases of construction and reconstruction that it has gone through over the years. One of the building's highlights is its façade, displaying a harmonious combination of simplicity and elegance.

Upon entering the church we find an impressive space, adorned with several altars, each with its own history and artistic meaning. The main altar stands out especially, a spectacular work of art. In addition to being a place of worship, the Co-Cathedral is also a very important area and cultural center for Vigo. The building has witnessed numerous significant events in the city's history and continues to be a meeting point for religious and cultural events in the community.
