If there is a monument in the city of Burgos that must be highlighted, that is without a doubt the Arco de Santa María; an imposing structure that dates back to nothing more and nothing less than the 14th century, although it underwent an important transformation and reform in the 16th century.
The monument is located in the historic center of the city, rising over one of the most emblematic areas of Burgos. The history of the Arco de Santa María goes back to its construction and the reasons that led to it: to serve as the main entrance to the walled city.
Its name, referring to the nearby Gothic church of Santa María la Mayor, also refers to the building's impressive arch and façade. Gothic and Renaissance in style, it is adorned with different sculptures and reliefs that capture different periods and historical episodes; mainly related to the city of Burgos.
One of the most outstanding aspects of the Arco de Santa María is without a doubt the tower, which also has a bell tower and clock; inviting us to enjoy the spectacular panoramic views of Burgos. Being one of the perfect excuses to visit the city, the Arco de Santa María has become one of the favorite spots for tourists thanks to its architectural and historical value; being also a reason for hosting different events of a cultural nature and exhibitions.
