The route of the Camino del Mar is one of the most spectacular routes to Santiago, where we can enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Rías Altas de Galicia. It also has the advantage of not being a very busy route, as it is a variant of the Northern Way, which then links with the English Way.
Sometimes, to deviate a little from the established route is something highly recommended as this way we can visit essential places, such as the Lighthouse of Cabo Ortegal and its surroundings.
This lighthouse is the most modern construction of this type in the province of A Coruña. Its construction was approved in 1982 and was completed two years later. Built on the tip of Cape Ortegal, it communicates with the town of Cariño by means of a road made specifically for it. It has a system that combines electric lighting with a gas reserve, which is activated in case of power failure.
The surroundings of the lighthouse are undoubtedly the main attraction of this location. Its position and height make it an exceptional viewpoint of the raging Cantabrian Coast breaking against the rocks.
From there you can see other nearby geographical points such as the Punta de Estaca de Bares or the Vixía Herbeira, which is the highest cliff in Europe.
