Lezama is a municipality in the province of Vizcaya of about 2,400 inhabitants, belonging to the region of Gran Bilbao and located in the immediate vicinity of the Basque capital, from which it is separated less than 11 km (it is located 146 km from San Sebastián ). The pilgrims will arrive in Lezama walking from Guernica along the Northern Way, which runs through the Cantabrian Mountains.
Lezama is a municipality near Bilbao, located in the Asúa Valley. Its area is 16.8 square km and its population does not reach 2.500 inhabitants, however there are thousands of people who walk its streets as it is a point of arrival and departure from the Camino de Santiago. When crossing the Northern Way through the center of this town, the number of people visiting Lezama can triple the real inhabitants of this municipality.
A very important fact of its history focuses on Pedro Ruiz de Lezama. This man rebuilt the famous Lezama Tower in 1360, one of the most important points of this town and which witnessed intense battles of the Lezama family against the Diaz de Landa family. This rivalry was so great that it lasted many years until it reached the point that Fernando de Lezama's son-in-law was beheaded by the enemies in front of the door of his house. This fact meant to worsen the situation and the enmity between these families that was appeased thanks to justice and different marital links.
If you are traveling on the Camino de Santiago or are planning to do so soon, you should know that the distance separating Lezama from Santiago de Compostela is 686 kilometers.
