After a complicated ascent through the Pyrenees, the pilgrims arrive in Roncesvalles where they will find various care and accommodation options. On entering the town they arrive at a restored pilgrim hostel albergue de peregrinos, located where the medieval hospital institution once stood. With capacity for 183 pilgrims it is considered a good option, especially given that reservation is normally not possible in many other establishments. In the case of the hostel being fully booked another option is Refugio Itzandegia, affiliated with the Real Colegiata. It is a spacious restored hall, with a twelfth-century setting, and has capacity for 124 pilgrims, who sleep in bunk beds. It is equipped with heating, hot water, showers and toilets. It costs 6 euros per night.
During busy pilgrimage periods the Collegiate also installs a Pilgrim Shelter Camp, built from prefabricated materials, it offers air conditioning, hot water showers, toilets, etc. These installations have a capacity of 200 bunk beds. Roncesvalles also has a hotel, two hostels and several apartments, which offer accommodation to a large number of pilgrims choosing to begin their journey to Santiago from this enclave.
