In the middle of the French Way, 185 kilometers from Santiago, we find ourselves in Villafranca del Bierzo. It is a city marked by centuries of history that can be found in each of its streets. One of the emblematic enclaves of the town is the Castle-Palace of the Marquises of Villafranca, which is considered an Asset of Cultural Interest.

History and architecture of the castle

This castle is built on the foundations of an earlier one. The one preserved today dates from the 16th century, although it underwent renovations throughout the following century. It was planned with the intention of using it as a palatial residence, rather than being focused on defensive placement. During the War of Independence and until 1819, it was looted and dismantled by the French army.

The architectural style of this castle-palace fits into the Renaissance. It has a quadrangular plan, and each corner is crowned by a three-story circular tower. The homage tower is also circular, and highlights the architectural ensemble for its elegance. Throughout the entire castle there are shields belonging to the lords who occupied it over the centuries.

Restoration and visit

Thanks to the fact that this castle has always been inhabited since its construction, even today, its state of conservation is better than that of others from the same period. Partial repairs have been made to several elements, resulting in some elements having a post-Renaissance aesthetic. Even after being looted during the 19th century, it is the best preserved in the entire Bierzo region.

As to this day it is still inhabited by the descendants of the Marquises of Villafranca, the interior cannot be visited except with the permission of the owners. Access to the outside is free, so you can walk the perimeter of this piece of living history.
