A Gothic treasure between History and Art

The Parish of Santa María La Real, located in Zarautz, is a true architectural and cultural gem with a rich history and an impressive artistic presence. It was built in the Gothic style at the end of the 15th century, although it has undergone several renovations over the centuries. For example, in the 16th century side chapels were added. On the other hand, its interior houses an outstanding baroque altarpiece built in 1560 by Andrés and Juan Araoz.

This same altarpiece, which begins on a stone pedestal, includes a wide bench, four sections and five streets, and is presided over by the Gothic image of Our Lady of La Real. In addition, it shows several scenes from the Passion of Christ, and is complemented by two small altars from the 17th century, one dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary and the other to Saint Exuperius.

In addition, the parish is part of the Monumental Archaeological Complex of Santa María la Real, along with the Zarautz Tower, the oldest building in life and dating from the 15th century. This bell tower currently houses the Museum of Art and History of Zarautz, and beneath its walls were found remains of the first necropolis of Zarautz from the 10th to the 15th centuries. In addition to its archaeological value, the church stands out for its unique location in Zarautz, a point where you can see both the countryside and the mountains as well as the large beach in the area.

The tower is known as the Torre de Zarautz, it looks towards the beach, while the main body of the church, with a Latin cross, presents a style of rational classicism and keeps within its walls the tomb of Lope Martínez de Zarautz, councilor of Henry IV of Castile. The temple is in itself a testimony to the historical and artistic past of Zarautz, but also constitutes a vital element in the landscape and cultural life of the city.
