Muralla de Lugo

Within the historic city of Lugo we find one of the most important buildings in the country, the Roman wall of Lugo. This popular building is a reference both at regional and national level and is the most emblematic place of this Galician city. 

Built in the 4th century during the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, it stands out for being the only Roman wall in the whole world that is still intact. It is thanks to this and to its good conservation that it was considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000, as well as being included in the Ways of Santiago de Compostela: French Way and Ways of Northern Spain because it currently belongs to the Primitive Way.

With a total length of 2266 meters, anyone can enjoy this emblematic building and walk over it as hundreds of years ago Roman citizens. You can also see the old town from any of the 85 towers located around the entire wall or cross it through its 10 access gates.

Although nowadays the wall of Lugo, serves only as a cultural and tourist element, it was founded in the year 13 B.C. by Paulo Fabio Máximo to protect the Roman Empire. This building used to protect what is now known as the historical center of Lugo, from which the city grew to its current size.
