One of the icons most associated with O Porriño is the church of Santa María de la Concepción. When completing the stage of the Portuguese Way that goes from Tui to Mos, we cross O Porriño. Just as the section that goes through the industrial estate of As Gándaras becomes endless, when we pass through the center of Porriño the road is wonderful. It is in this section that we pass by the Church of Santa María de la Concepción.
This is the parish church of O Porriño, due to its importance. Receives the invocation of the Immaculate Conception, although it was not always like this. Centuries ago there was another church in its place, and it was dedicated to Saint George. The current building was first dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la O, until 1809, when it changed to Santa María.
The church was built in the middle of the 16th century, and its style is austere. It consists of a central nave and two lateral naves, in which we can find images of various saints and, of course, of the Virgin. This church that crosses the Camino de Santiago is already a symbol of this stage. Don't be fooled by its simple decoration, this temple is one of the most valued in the area and has many centuries of history behind it.
