Many of you have written to us in recent months with many questions about the luggage to be carried to the Camino, doubts arise especially when we decided to do it first. So we want to give you some tips when choosing what we carry within our backpack, what is essential and what can be left at home quietly, because either we will not need either better ourselves with it directly on our trip. Pack our backpack involves asking questions like what is truly essential?
The choice of our backpack is one of most important decisions we have to do before launching the road and we do not mean it to be very good or very nice, if not something much more important, covering best our needs. These needs are related to the volume of baggage that we carry within it, so before going to the store to find your backpack, it is important to have completely closed the chapter of what will take it.
So how do we decide what we got and what we leave behind? It is important to apply various principles such as choosing the lighter clothes as we can without losing functionality (although not the prettiest, what counts are lightweight materials?); choose the smallest objects (essential travel brush or without travel journals, conforming with notes mobile) and bet on simplicity, giving absolute priority to only what we will need on the trip.
Also it should be creative and find multiple uses for each object that we carry with us, and for that matter, a smartphone we will help as we can to point directions, enlighten us with your flashlight, take pictures at a basic level or check the weather you will do the next day. Finally, we must not forget that the Camino de Santiago, especially the French, ever give a better service to the pilgrim, so in the localities through which we stop we can get almost anything we need.
Following these principles in the choice of our material we can apply the 10% rule we mentioned in the title; ie get our backpack weighing no more than 10-12% of the weight of our body so that our march by the Camino does not become a real pain. Beyond the weight of our backpack it would only have to have the extra weight of water and food every day, essential before you start walking every day; The good news is that we'll gradually consuming, so that the more tired we -at the end of the stage- is when we go lighter.
