Religious monument that holds the title of Imperial in Logroño

The city of Logroño has become, for many reasons, one of the places that all pilgrims visit not only during their journey, but to explore the wonders it hides. There are many destinations that we can visit and, among them, is the Imperial Church of Santa María de Palacio, also known simply as Church of Santa María de Palacio.

Among many of the curiosities that this place hides, what draws the most attention is that “imperial” that adorns his name. This is because he received a donation by King Alfonso VII in the year 1130. With what? end? With the intention that the first foundation of the order of the Holy Sepulcher would be erected in the Kingdom of Castile. For this reason, this church has the nickname “imperial”.

However, let's go back to its history, to the moment it was built. This work took place between the 12th and 13th centuries. However, it was not until the 15th century when the reconstruction of both the transept and the chancel took place. Currently, only the Gothic-style pyramidal dome is preserved from that original structure, with the shape of a large imperial crown, very appropriate for its name.

Another aspect that draws attention to the Church is that it has three naves. These end in apsidal chapels, although the gaze of many goes to the octagonal dome, which extends outside, giving a unique appearance to this Gothic pyramidal tower. Its façade also stands out for having its entrance on the south side, which was built by Juan de la Riba in 1627. And its interior? It is pure magic if we take into account the imposing main altarpiece, which was made by Arnao de Bruxelles.

However, for many, the most representative thing is the Church's spire, which was built in the 13th century. Luckily, for all pilgrims who take the French Way, it is a visit that is impossible to overlook and is worth taking a moment to enjoy.
