History of the Church of San Tirso

The construction of the Church of San Tirso, located in Sahagún (León), dates back to the 12th century. Considered one of the most representative buildings of art Castilian-Leonese Mudejar, the Church of San Tirso is located in the center of the city. It is also considered one of the reference points on the Camino de Santiago

Originally, the building was part of a Benedictine monastic complex known as the Monastery of San Benito. The Church of San Tirso has undergone several modifications over time, as well as the church. as extensions. In all of them you can appreciate and see the different architectural styles reflected. 

These modifications and restorations have been key to preserving the structure and ornamentation of the building; praising it to the point of making it a must-see for anyone who comes to Sahagún. 

Style of the Church of San Tirso

The exterior of the church of San Tirso has a main façade made up of three portals; each one adorned with an ornately decorated tympanum. in them we can appreciate different biblical scenes, from the Annunciation to the Last Judgment. For its part, the square-shaped bell tower was built several centuries later than the first part of the church, specifically in the 15th century

As far as the interior of the building is concerned, we find an impressive central nave, in the Romanesque style and where there is also room for semicircular arches as well as round arches. such as capitals carved with all kinds of motifs, from vegetal to figurative. The choir is located at the back of the church. Renaissance in style and with interesting carved wooden chairs. 

One of the most important aspects of the Church of San Tirso can be found in its crypt. Dating from the 11th century, the crypt is considered one of the best samples of pre-Romanesque architecture in our country. It has three naves, each with a barrel vault and various tombs and sarcophagi.

The Church of San Tirso has the following hours for anyone who wants to visit it. 

Winter time

  • From Wednesday to Saturday from 10:40 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 5:50 p.m.
  • On Sundays, only morning schedules are available.

Daylight Saving Time

  • Wednesday to Saturday from 10:15 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • On Sundays only morning schedules are available.
