The arrival in Portomarín has a most peculiar welcome: an imposing staircase, and at the top, a chapel. It is a Baroque-style historical monument dating from the 18th century.
The chapel, with a single nave and a high altar, is dedicated to Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves and the place where the old Domus Dei hospital was located and assisted by the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.
The staircase that leads to the chapel is made of granite and has a total of 82 steps and a height of 17 meters. Also built in the 18th century, it has ornamental details. Both the chapel and the As Neves stairway are one of the most important historical and tourist sites in the region, attracting a good number of visitors and pilgrims from the area.
