The territory of what we know today as Castilla y León is halfway between the entrance to the Iberian Peninsula through the Pyrenees and Santiago de Compostela. For this reason, it has experienced an almost constant transit of pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago for centuries.

The Camino de Santiago helped, in part, the medieval kingdoms of Castile and León to grow into two of the most powerful Christian kingdoms of the time. This helped finance the construction and maintenance of many of the monuments that we can find today in this Autonomous Community.

In addition to the material historical heritage, Castilla y León also has beautiful natural sites, such as the Sierra de la Demanda in Burgos or Lake Sanabria in Zamora.

Which routes of the Pilgrims Route to Santiago de Compostela run through Castilla y León?

Throughout this Autonomous Community there are a total of twelve routes of the Way of St. James, ranging from the French Way or the Via de la Plata, to other less known or variants of the main ones, such as the Way of Madrid. All these routes cross the region from north to south.

The French Way

The main route of the Camino de Santiago crosses more than 400 km through the provinces of Burgos, Palencia and León. It enters this Autonomous Community in the middle of the Santo Domingo de la Calzada - Belorado stage and passes through it in the following fifteen stages. This is the route most traveled by pilgrims and where we will find more services available during most of the year.

Vía de la Plata (Silver Route)

This route is also one of the most popular and follows the route of an ancient Roman road that crossed the peninsula from south to north. It crosses the provinces of Salamanca, Zamora and León, where it joins the French Way in the city of Astorga.

We can also find its Portuguese variant, which deviates from the city of Zamora to Portugal, and then continues through Galicia.

Sanabrés Way

Also known as the Mozarabic Way, it is a variant of the Silver Route that deviates from the main route in the town of Granja de la Moreruela, in the province of Zamora.

Other routes

In addition to these routes, we can find many others that cross this Autonomous Community:
