Casa del Sacristán

When it comes to touring the Iberian Peninsula inland, there are several routes that we can take to undertake our adventure as pilgrims. Two of the most important are the French Way and the Via de la Plata, and both have a stop in Astorga, a most interesting city of León, where places like the Casa del Sacristán make this visit worthwhile.

A historic building where nothing is as it seems inside.

Although it is true that what most attracts attention in Astorga is its Cathedral, its Episcopal Palace and the incredible city wall, the reality is that this town hides many other charming places along its streets. And if there is one place worth visiting, it is the Casa del Sacristán.

It is one of the oldest buildings in the town, with more than 300 years of history, having been built at the end of the 17th century. And although it is small in size, it has all the most characteristic elements of this period and even bears similarities to the stately buildings.

As its name indicates, this was the house of the Sacristan, an ecclesiastical figure who was in charge of guarding and watching over very important objects such as vestments and sacred books. For this reason, these buildings used to be located very close to the Cathedral, and although we can sometimes find them next to it, in this case it is right in front of it.

Today, the Casa del Sacristán de Astorga is visited for offering a great visual experience, created by a fictional character known as Piter Kill. As the story goes, he was passionate about light, and with candles, mirrors and by perforating walls, he managed to fill this house with incredible optical effects.

Thus, the rooms have been turned into a "camera obscura" where the shadows will make us see things that are not really there. In addition, the sun will also play a very important role, as the luminosity of the exterior will influence the way we can live this incredible experience in the best way possible.
